Build vs. buy: when custom software is actually worth it

By Appxcel Team · June 9, 2026

Not every problem needs custom software. Knowing when to build and when to buy off-the-shelf saves founders a lot of money and time.

Custom software is powerful, and it's not always the answer. Some of the best advice we give founders is to not build something, because a tool already does it better and cheaper than we could.

Buy your commodities

If a problem is solved well by an existing tool and it isn't your competitive edge, buy it. You don't need to build your own CRM, email service, or payment processor.

Build your edge

Custom software earns its cost where it's the thing that makes you different, or where no existing tool fits how your business actually works.

The hybrid is usually right

Most good products are a mix: buy the boring, commodity parts, build the parts that matter, and invest in integrating them so the seams don't show.
